Before the film begins, Fairey gives audiences a space-inspired concert of around 30 minutes — a musical adventure in its own right.
Then the complete film takes over the screen and Julian Nott’s score is performed live, bringing every launch, landing and lunar surprise into the room.
About the film
A Grand Day Out was the film that first introduced audiences to Wallace and Gromit and marked the beginning of one of Britain’s best-loved screen partnerships. Nick Park began creating the film in 1982 while studying at the National Film and Television School. After Aardman recognised the potential of Park’s work, the studio employed him and helped him complete the painstaking stop-motion production. Seven years after work began, A Grand Day Out was finally finished in 1989 and went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film.
The brass-band version of Julian Nott’s original score was arranged by KNDS Fairey Band’s Principal Trombone, Rebecca Lundberg. It received its world premiere in 2025 at Tennants Garden Rooms in Leyburn, performed by Leyburn Band and conducted by Rebecca.
KNDS Fairey Band’s live presentation begins with a specially chosen concert of space-inspired music. For around 30 minutes, the band takes audiences on a musical journey through the stars, featuring music from Star Wars and E.T., alongside works including Dan Price’s Starburst and music by Paul Lovatt-Cooper.
Then it is time to blast off as the complete film is projected on the big screen, with KNDS Fairey Band performing the soundtrack live and bringing Wallace and Gromit’s first adventure to life in a completely new way.
